Rain Down

As I finish up this blog, once again I look outside my office window and see the rain pouring down. It sees to be a growing weather trend over the past few weeks, and to be honest it’s one that I could use a little less of. But alas every spring and fall we do have weeks like this where the rain indeed must pour in order for life as we know it to be maintained.

Seasons like this remind me of excerpts from various worship songs written over the past 20 years like:

Rain down your love on us, rain down your grace - David Crowder

There’s a rain a pouring, showers from above – David Ruis

Rain down, all around the world we’re singing, rain down - Martin Smith, Delirious

The weather reminds me of these songs, but the songs serve to remind me of the never-ending saturating love of our heavenly father. Just like a good fall rainstorm pours over us and floods the ground around us, our savior longs to pour His love over us and flood our lives in the same manner.

We’ve been looking at Life In The Spirit on Sundays throughout the month of September, and Life In The Spirit is all about letting God’s love and His Holy Spirit flow through our lives. God’s intention for us as Christ followers is that we act as a conduit for His Holy Spirit. That we let His Holy Spirit flow and pour into us, and in turn we let that goodness flow back out into the world around us that we live and work in every day. Life In The Spirit means daily getting drenched in the outpouring of God’s rain, and then letting that rain seep on to all those around us.

I remember Mackie, Paula’s pet dog back when we were dating. Mackie looked like Mr. Mugs from the children’s books I used to read back in public school; a fun loving long haired shaggy dog. If it had been raining or wet out and Mackie came back in he would immediately stop and shake his coat vigorously soaking everyone around him with the water he had got on him. When we are living in the spirit, when we are full of God’s rain, God wants us to shake our coat on all of those around us and let them experience God’s rain too. But we can only impact those around us with God’s love if we have first been filled up with his spirit and are living Life In The Spirit.

So let it rain. Let God’s love shower us, drenching us in His love, and let us live Life In The Spirit to the fullest every day and in every way, letting all those around us experience the love of God flowing through us.
